have you ever tried
looking for yourself
and found you were standing
in the shadow of your parents
we are molded by their hands
shaped with their dreams
even when we think we rebel
they likely did the same
does their shadow weigh on you
making you fell somehow less
do not feel alone in this
it is simply growing up
we learn from those around us
the things we hear and see
eventually being shaped by them
copies or opposites for good or bad
do not feel disheartened though
for in time you too will see
parents often feel self guilt
for their every assumed mistake
realize the shadow felt around you
is a shelter from life's storms
to let you grow beyond them
becoming the protector in the end
I made a pledge to myself to write a poem a day for the entire year. Now to follow through. I preface this with a reminder; most of the poems written for this year long project will be done so spontaneously and therefore will not be edited. Bear with me on this. The project goal is to get them written over getting them perfect. Several times there will simply be the poem with no title. When that happens suggestions for a title will be welcomed in the comments.

Although this is only one view, one experience, and one moment in time, it is worth considering - even if only to reject all or some of it.
ReplyDeleteThe feeling of this poem is an "in the moment" reflection. I feel that. It feels like the start of a discussion. One cannot argue with it. One can only share one's related thoughts. You seem to be speaking to someone and trying to explain life to them. It allows it to be less intensely about you when you turn it like that. I'm not sure if that's a good thing.
You seem to be speaking to another person. Reading this poem, I took it to be me, of course. *smiles* There is truth in this poem even though there are parts with which I disagree. When we grow beyond our parents, when we become their protector, or others' protectors, we must wish for them to grow beyond us as well.
ReplyDeleteI like the feeling in this poem that I am hearing your inner voice and that you are stepping beyond a "skin" you recently inhabited.
